Women’s Soccer Opens Conference Slate With Draw vs. SMU
Sep 21, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Woerner, Levasseur, and Larisey all score in the conference opener
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team opened American Athletic Conference play with a 3-3 tie against SMU Thursday evening. The Tigers move to 6-3-1 on the year and 0-0-1 in conference play.
"They're good, they're one of the best teams in the conference," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We knew it was going to be a battle. I think that our team can give more and I have to demand that. This conference is a beast. We'll learn from this and move on."
Memphis capitalized early in the fifth minute with Elizabeth Woerner's team-leading eighth goal of the season. The duo of Stasia Mallin and Mikayla Morton combined a throw-in and a header right to Woerner who launched a shot from the right, outside the box.
SMU answered in the 10th minute off of a corner kick to tie up the contest at 1-1.
A little over 10 minutes later, Woerner sparked the Tiger offense once again. With the ball in the midfield, Woerner split the defenders on a pass to Morton coming up the left side. Morton then found Marie Levasseur in the box who finished off Morton's pass to the left side of the net for her fifth score of the year.
The two squads went back-and-forth in the second half after SMU tied up the contest in the 82nd minute. After the Mustangs equalized the match at 2-2, Memphis had an answer in Clarissa Larisey in the 85th minute. Larisey scored her second collegiate goal off of a corner kick by Jessica Lisi.
SMU tied up the contest one more time in the 88th minute and the match ended that way in a 3-3 draw.
Rachel Ashworth Shepard finished the match with a career-high 14 saves.
The Tigers resume play Sunday afternoon against Houston at the Billy J. Murphy Track and Soccer Complex. Kick-off against the Cougars is slated for 1 p.m. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
