Women’s Soccer Rallies To Defeat Houston, 2-1
Sep 24, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Mikayla Morton and Catherine Levasseur score in first conference victory of the season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat Houston in overtime by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The Tigers rallied in the final 15 minutes of regulation to force overtime before Catherine Levasseur's game-winning goal in the 93rd minute improved the Tigers to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in AAC play.
"I have a lot of mixed emotions after this match," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "I thought we lacked passion in the first 70 minutes. There was a different amount of energy when we came back out. I'm very proud they were able to bounce back in the game and get the result."
The Tigers came out firing in the first half, outshooting the Cougars 11-3. Houston, however, took advantage of one of their three shots with a goal in the 34th minute of the match.
A lightning delay struck with 16:41 remaining in the contest, forcing the two squads into the locker room.
Upon restarting the match, Memphis came out firing on all cylinders. In the 84th minute, Houston was called for a foul in the box, granting Memphis a penalty kick. Mikayla Morton was assigned to take the kick and she converted to tie the contest up at 1-1.
Continual pressure throughout the remainder of regulation and into overtime created multiple chances for the Tigers. After a Memphis corner kick was initially cleared by the Cougars, Jessica Lisi had another opportunity to serve the ball into the box in the 93rd minute. This time, Levasseur connected with the service to head the ball past the keeper to the right corner, lifting Memphis to victory.
Memphis finished the match outshooting Houston 22-5. The goal for Morton was her sixth this season and it was Levasseur's second. Rachel Ashworth Shepard earned the victory in goal with two saves for the Tigers.
The Tigers will now travel to Florida to take on USF and UCF next weekend. For more information on the Memphis women's soccer team, follow the Tigers on Facebook at /MemphisWSoccer and on Twitter and Instagram at @MemphisWSoccer.
