Tigers down Arkansas State for fifth-straight win
Sep 13, 2018 | Women's Soccer
JONESBORO, Ark. – Memphis women's soccer notched its fifth consecutive victory and seventh shutout of the season after a 3-0 win at Arkansas State on Thursday evening.
The Tigers (7-1-0) found a pair of goals early to build momentum then scored late to seal their seventh win of the year. Defensively, Memphis limited Arkansas State to four shots as goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg tallied her 11th career shutout.
"I'm proud of the girls. Anytime you score three and give up zero, you have to be happy. Arkansas State has been having a good year, and to get that win on the road – I'm pleased," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "There's always things you can do better. There are some things you can always clean up. We're just trying to get better each game."
Memphis struck early off a set piece to establish momentum. Olivia Gauthier sailed a corner kick in the box and Samantha Murphy redirected it into the back of the net to get the Tigers on the board.
Murphy's goal was her fifth of the season as the forward has now scored in four straight contests.
"Sam is doing well. Watching her grow as a player has been fun," Monaghan noted of the sophomore. "She still has room to improve and I know she will do that. She's only going to get better and better. She's doing extremely well."
The Tigers continued the offense surge when Serena Dolan increased the Tiger lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute. Dolan took a pass from Stasia Mallin in front of the net and fired it past the goalkeeper for her first score of the season.
Despite a late Arkansas State push in the second half, the Tigers kept the Red Wolves off the board. Memphis then sealed the match in the 89th minute when Elizabeth Woerner tallied her second score of the year. Marie Levasseur sent a pass to an open Woerner, who sailed a shot across the front of the net and into the bottom corner.
The Tigers return to action at Ole Miss on Sunday for their non-conference finale. Kickoff from Oxford, Miss., is set for 7 p.m.
