Softball Hosts Mississippi State in 2019 Home Opener

First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the Tigers Softball Complex
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- After three weeks on the road to open the 2019 campaign, the University of Memphis softball team comes home on Wednesday evening to take on Mississippi State at 6 p.m. Memphis is set to compete at the Tigers Softball Complex for 19 of the next 20 scheduled games.

Memphis is looking to bounce back after a tough showing at the LSU Tournament last weekend. The Tigers faced stiff competition against CSUN, Michigan, LSU and Stanford and ultimately come into Wednesday's midweek with a 5-8 overall record.

Baylee Smith continues to lead the Tigers offensively with a .441 batting average in 34 at bats. The sophomore utility player from Henderson, Tenn. is the team-leader in hits with 15 including nine extra base hits. She is also a perfect 4-for-4 on the base paths.

The Tigers pitching corps enter the Mississippi State contest with a 3.08 team ERA. Mariah Nichols leads the team in innings pitched with 33.1 and Karli Perque is the team-leader in strikeouts with 21.

Mississippi State comes into Wednesday's contest with an 11-4 overall record including a 9-2 mark at home. This is the first true road game for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and the USA Softball Top 25 Poll.

Mia Davidson continues to build of a strong freshman campaign, leading Bulldogs offensively with a .529 batting average. She has already connected on nine home runs this season and is second on the team with 20 RBIs.

Six players are hitting over .300 for the Bulldogs and three players own double-digit RBI totals. Collectively, the Bulldogs own a .968 fielding percentage and a .303 team batting average.

Vann Stuedeman is the head coach of the Bulldogs and is currently in her eighth season at the helm. She has garnered over 250 victories at Mississippi State.
