Memphis wins fourth-consecutive conference opening series
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the fourth consecutive season, the University of Memphis softball team won the conference opening series with a 9-1 victory over ECU Sunday afternoon. The Tigers improve to 17-14 on the year and 2-1 in American Athletic Conference play with the win.
Memphis finished the weekend with 21 runs scored on 27 hits, with hits from eight different Tigers on Sunday.
Memphis took an early lead over the Pirates on a passed ball. Delaney Smith led the inning off with a double down the left field line and after a fly ball by Baylee Smith advanced her to third, she scored on the ECU miscue.
ECU evened the score in the top of the second before Memphis stormed back with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Samantha Ibison led the third off with a single up the middle, igniting hits by Gracie Morton, Baylee Smith, Ryleigh Aungst and Alyssa Dean. Dean's single to left field ultimately cleared the bases as the ECU left fielder misplayed the hit, giving Memphis a 7-1 edge.
Memphis added one run in the fifth and one in the sixth, closing out the contest largely in part to Delaney Smith's leadoff triple. Smith scored on a groundout by Gracie Morton.
Karli Perque improved to 4-5 on the year after throwing her third complete game of the season. She struck out five in the victory.
