MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis baseball took Game 1 of its midweek series against North Alabama, using late offense to claim a 3-2 win at FedExPark on Monday.
Facing a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning, junior Nick Vaage connected on a two-out RBI single through the right side of the diamond to plate the game-winning run. Vaage finished the game 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
At the dish, Ben Brooks (2-for-4), Hunter Goodman (2-for-3), Kyle Ouellette (2-for-4) and Alec Trela (2-for-4) posted multi-hit performances. Ouellette also tallied his 10th RBI of the season.
In the ninth, closer Colton Neel retired all three batters he faced and struck out a pair for his eighth save of the season. Alex Smith tallied the win on the mound after striking out four in 1.2 innings of work.
Despite being outhit by the visiting Lions, Memphis pitching and defense stood tall, stranding 11 UNA runners throughout the evening, including nine runners left on base in the first five frames.
UNA (11-28) plated the games first run in the fourth inning after a wild pitch scored a runner from third base.
Memphis (19-18) broke through in the fifth inning with a pair runs. Goodman started the rally with a single, and after Payton Marshall drew a walk, Ouellette drove an RBI single to center to even the game. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position for an RBI groundout from Vaage to give Memphis a 2-1 lead.
After the Lions tied the game in the top of the seventh, Memphis regained the lead in the home half. Goodman led off the frame with a double, and Vaage's timely two-out single broke the tie.
