Softball Drops Game One to UConn
Apr 05, 2019 | Softball
STORRS, Conn. – The UofM softball team dropped game one of its three-game series against UConn on Friday. Memphis falls to 20-18 overall with a 2-5 conference record.
After giving up a five-run third inning, the Tigers' comeback fell short of overcoming the deficit. Alyssa Dean led the Tigers with a pair of hits. Freshman Gracie Morton powered her second-career home run in the fourth inning.
Following a three-up, three-down first inning, the Memphis pitching fell into a slump, allowing big innings in the third and fifth innings.
The Tigers fought back, however, scoring three runs in the third inning. Baylee Smith led off the inning with a bunt and advanced to second on a fielding error. Ashley Threatt followed it with a first-pitch RBI single to score Smith.
Still on first base, Threatt was driven in off of Gracie Morton's second home run of the season. The freshman powered the ball over the fence in center field, pulling the Tigers within three.
UConn pulled away from there, solidifying the game-one win in the fifth inning.
Mariah Nichols was dealt the loss after tossing 2.1 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out a pair of batters.
