Griggs leads Tigers in setback at No. 4/6 UConn

Freshman guard pulls within five of tying Memphis' single-season three-point record
STORRS, Conn. – Led by freshman guard Madison Griggs' 15 points, the University of Memphis women's basketball team dropped a road contest to No. 4/6 UConn Friday evening by a score of 94-55 in Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. The Tigers move to 12-11 overall and 3-7 in American Athletic Conference play.

Playing into their home crowd, UConn jumped out to a 7-0 advantage over the visiting Tigers.
A pair of baskets by Alana Davis and Madison Griggs cut UConn's lead down to two, 7-5, with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Through the heart of the first period, Memphis' defense held UConn to a 0-for-6 effort from the floor. UConn's response, however, used a 14-2 run to close out the stanza.

Back-to-back triples by Griggs and Julan McDonald in the second quarter cut the deficit down to 29-17 with 8:45 on the clock. The Huskies answered with a 23-6 run to close out the second quarter.

Momentum from the first half carried its way to the second for the Huskies, as UConn jumped out on a 10-2 run before McDonald knocked down her second three-pointer of the contest.

To close out the third quarter, Griggs knocked down her fifth three-pointer of the contest, marking the fourth time this season she has hit at least five three-pointers in a game.

In the final quarter, Memphis strung together a 10-3 run with less than four minutes remaining on the clock, capped by an Aerial Wilson three-pointer. The Tigers finished the quarter outscoring the UConn, 17-15.

Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu finished with nine points and eight rebounds, coming up just shy of her 10th double-double of the season. Gazmyne Herndon recorded a career-high nine assists to go along with seven rebounds. Keke Hunter added 10 points with a 5-for-9 effort from the floor while Davis finished with eight rebounds and six points.

Memphis returns to action next Wednesday evening with a road trip to Wichita State. Tipoff against the Shockers is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at Charles Koch Arena.
