Memphis comes up short to No. 12 Louisiana in series finale

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –Memphis softball came up short to No. 12 Louisiana in the series finale Sunday. The Tigers rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to erase what was an 11-2 deficit in the eventual 11-7 final.

Mariah Nichols got the start in the circle for the Tigers. Baylee Smith scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first on wild pitch after she hit a triple to right field. The Cajuns would even things up in the top of the second, as Frankie Izard scored on Karly Heath's slap hit into left. Louisiana added two more in the third with back-to-back home runs from Jade Gortarez and Justice Milz.

The Cajuns had their biggest inning of the game in the sixth, scoring five runs, including a two-run RBI single to left to make it 9-2. The Cajuns added two more runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 11-2.

Gracie Morton started off the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run over the center field fence. Two batters later, Kendall Lee hit a double to right center. Mariah Nichols got her first RBI of the season with a single up the middle. Delaney Smith hit a single to right to score Aliana Zavala to make it 11-7.

The Tigers have fallen to 1-11 on the season and the Cajuns have improved to 13-4.

The Tigers will be on the road in Starkville to take on Mississippi State. The Bulldogs received four votes in last week's top 25 voting. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Nusz Park. The Tigers are back at Memphis Softball Complex this weekend with a doubleheader on Friday against Mississippi Valley State and a three-game series versus Indiana State. The Tigers will play the Sycamores in a doubleheader on Saturday and the series finale on Sunday.
