Tigers Take on Mississippi State in Second Round of NCAA Tournament
Nov 17, 2022 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will play in their second consecutive National Tournament Second Round match when they take on Mississippi State this Friday afternoon in Fayetteville, Ark.
Memphis (10-5-5) advanced to the Second Round after defeating 10th ranked Saint Louis on their home field. Saorla Miller netted the game-winning goal in the 64' after Mya Jones played a ball to her deep in the box. Miller's strike would roll between the Billikin goalkeeper's legs and find the back of the net.
"That was a great performance," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Saint Louis is a very good team, and I couldn't be prouder of this group."
In the team's ninth shutout of the season, Memphis held Saint Louis to just four shots on-goal, all of which Claire Wyville stopped.
Mississippi State (12-5-4) took down New Mexico State in their First Round match where Rylie Combs' 88th minute goal would give the Bulldogs to their NCAA Tournament win in program history.
For the season, Maggie Wadsworth and Hailey McWhirter led the team with 15 combined goals while Maddy Anderson has been State's go-to goalkeeper with 25 saves in 14 appearances. Anderson currently ranks 23rd in the country in saves per game and 19th in save percentage.
"I think this is a very good matchup as long as we bring what we've brought the last few games. Obviously, we're going to have to be at our best to give us the best chance at winning," said Monaghan.
This will be the 17th all-time meeting between the Tigers and Bulldogs. The last time the two teams met, Memphis took the 4-0 win over State behind a hat-trick from Clarissa Larisey.
Friday's match is scheduled to kick-off at 4 p.m. CT in Fayetteville, Ark. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+ and at GoTigersGo.com.
