Tigers Can’t Hold Early Lead in 14-6 Loss to Wichita State
Apr 30, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 5, Wichita State: 10
WP: Cameron Bye (4-1)
LP: Jacob Gilmore (1-3)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- Memphis opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, as LF Ian Bibiloni connected on his second home run in as many days, as his fourth home run of the season put Memphis in front 2-0
- The Tigers added a run in the third against Bye, as CF Zach Wilson led off with a single, stole second base, moved to third on a base hit by SS Ben Brooks, and scored on a sacrifice fly from DH Jacob Compton
- LHP Dalton Fowler (ND) worked around three walks and two hits over the first three innings, as he kept the Shockers off the board, but Wichita State sent eight men to the plate in a five-run fourth inning
- DH Garrett Kocis led off the fourth with a solo home run, while Ingram's three-run home run five batters later made it 5-3 Shockers
- Memphis' first two batters reached in the fourth and both eventually scored, one on an error and another on a game-tying sacrifice fly from 2B Austin Baskin, as the game was tied 5-5 after four innings
- A leadoff error sparked a four-run sixth for the Shockers, as Wichita State batted around in the inning
- Ingram's two-run double knocked Gilmore out of the game and put the Shockers in front 7-5, while an RBI groundout from 3B Sawyre Thornhill and an RBI single from SS Andrew Stewart pushed the Wichita State lead to 9-5
- The Shockers added insurance in each of the final three innings, with a sacrifice fly by Ingram in the seventh, a run-scoring wild pitch in the eighth, and three runs as they batted around in the ninth that made it 14-6, the eventual final
Notables:
- Compton (3-3) recorded his third three-hit game of the season, his team-leading 14th multi-hit effort
- 3B Logan Kohler (2-3) notched his 13th multi-hit game of the year, while Bibiloni tallied his fourth multi-RBI game of the season
- With his eighth inning RBI single, RF Blake Daniels extended his on-base streak to 17 games, tied for the third longest on-base streak for a Tigers hitter this season
- Bibiloni (1-2) has now reached in 14 straight games, while Wilson (1-4) has reached in 12 straight
