Tigers Grind Out 52-43 Win Over Howard

NASSAU, Bahamas. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team played in its second game of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament Sunday evening against Howard University. A late run from the Tigers secured the 52-43 win over the Bison Sunday night.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 2-3.
The Tigers got a hot start from its offense to start the game; Madison Griggs and Ki'Ari Cain drained three-pointers in the opening 10 minutes while Layken Cox added in four quick points.
Memphis' defense was the star to start – forcing Howard into eight first quarter turnovers that turned into nine points for the Tigers. A 7-0 run to end the quarter, that saw baskets from Cain, Cox and Kai Carter, gave Memphis an 18-10 lead.
The Tigers and Bison traded baskets to open the second quarter. But, another three-pointer from Cain and a steal-and-score from Destyne Jackson put Memphis up 28-20 heading into halftime.
A 9-3 run to open the second half cut the Tiger lead to just two after Howard scored on three consecutive plays. Memphis faced a 31-29 lead with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter. Howard regained the lead late in the third quarter after holding Memphis scoreless for more than three minutes.
After the Bison got up by four with two minutes left in the quarter, back-to-back buckets from Cain and Alasia Smith in the final minute made it a 36-36 game through 30 minutes.
A defensive battle ensued between the Bison and Tigers to start the fourth quarter; both teams held the other scoreless for over three minutes. Memphis strung together a 7-0 run mid-way through the frame to extend it's lead out to 44-38 following a three-pointer from Griggs.
Griggs sank her fourth three-pointer of the game with 1:31 left in the game to tie the school's all-time three-point field goal record for men's and women's basketball. Her bucket started an 8-1 run to finish out the game and secure the 52-43 victory.
Madison Griggs led all players with 20 points while going 7-15 from the field. Ki'Ari Cain came off the bench to add in 13 points – nine of which came from behind the arc. Shelbee Brown was dominant on the boards, grabbing nine rebounds while Kai Carter blocked three shots.
As a team, Memphis shot 33% from the field while sinking seven three-pointers.
The Tigers will play on Monday at 5:30 p.m. against the winner of Middle Tennessee/DePaul.
