Memphis Closes Out Season with Win Over North Texas

DENTON, Texas – The University of Memphis volleyball team defeated North Texas in three sets hard to close out their 2023 season. The Tigers (11-20, 7-12 AAC) fought hard against the Mean Green in three close sets, finding success behind the service line and at the net. Memphis finished the season on a three-match win streak.

"What a great way to end the season with a sweep on the road! This was a credit to the entire roster and staff for preparing to play since our Temple matches last weekend," head coach Sean Burdette shared. "We had a strong serve/pass game and our block enabled to get back in front of UNT in that first set."

The Tigers recorded 34 kills, 37 digs, nine blocks and six aces in the match.

Memphis 3, North Texas 0

SET ONE

North Texas got off to a quick start, taking an early 10-4 lead, forcing a Memphis timeout. They were assisted in two service aces and strong performances at the net.
The Tigers tied it up midway through the match. Blocks from Autumn Flynn, Eleftheria Baxa, Clara Bednarek and Reilly Briggs along with back-to-back aces from Abigail Schlueter helped the Tigers in their efforts.
Memphis carried the lead late into the set, going on an 11-2 run. UNT climbed back in forcing four set points for Memphis before pushing a timeout call. The Tigers would go on to take the set 25-23.

SET TWO

The Tigers took off with an early lead in the set going on a 4-0 run and forcing an early Mean Green timeout.
Memphis held the lead halfway through the set, aided by errors from UNT and kills from Baxa and Bednarek. The Tigers forced another UNT timeout after going on a 6-2 run.
The Mean Green put together a 6-1 run of their own in the second half of the set, with kills from Aryn Johnson and Sh'Diamond Holly, forcing a Tiger timeout.
The Mean Green put a run together late in set, holding momentum, however, were unable to push past the Tigers. Memphis took the set 25-23.

SET THREE

Memphis and UNT opened the set trading points back and forth before the Tigers put together a 6-0 run, forcing an early timeout. Kills from Jordan Heatherly and Bednarek and a service ace from Tabytha Toelke assisted the Tigers in their run.
UNT found momentum midway through the set as Treyaunna Rush and Holly put up a strong attacking front at the net.
Memphis forced a UNT timeout late in the set after a kill from Baxa. The Tigers would close out the set on a 5-0 run, capitalizing off errors from the Mean Green along with an ace from Rylee Busse and a kill from Briggs.

NOTABLES

Bednarek and Briggs led the Tigers with nine kills apiece.
A pair of Tigers recorded hitting clips over .300 in the match: Bednarek (.444) and Briggs (.312).
Flynn and Bednarek led the Tigers in blocks with four, followed by Briggs with three.
The Tigers were lead in digs by Schlueter and Busse with eight each
