Mar 20, 2023 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger softball team will host Central Arkansas Tuesday, March 21, and the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Wednesday, March 22, in midweek games before opening American Athletic Conference play against Houston this weekend, March 24-26. The Tigers (4-23) look to finish up their long home stand stretch and end their current losing streak as they begin conference competition this weekend.
"Really looking forward to this week. Central Arkansas obviously has a good resume of teams that they've played. We should be excited to play them, it's another quality game for us," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro said. "Then we play Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday and then we start conference. Hopefully we have some good competition here in the next couple games and be competing and sticking with the process. We're really looking forward to hosting our first weekend here in conference."
Central Arkansas (18-7) is sitting on a three-game win streak heading into the match up on Tuesday. The Bears have a signature 2-1 win over No. 4 Arkansas back on March 6. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-21) is currently on a three-game losing streak coming into its game on Wednesday.
Houston (12-16) is holding a four-game losing streak as they travel to Memphis to begin conference play this weekend. The Cougars finished fourth in the AAC last season going 8-9-1 in conference and taking the series last year. Houston currently sits one spot above Memphis in the AAC standings, holding onto the sixth pace ranking.
Memphis struggled this past weekend against Indiana and Northwestern State, dropping its four games. The Tigers recorded 11 runs off 26 hits over the weekend. Two Tigers are currently hitting .300 or higher: Sam Ibison and Kendall Lee. Aliana Zavala and Meagan Chism follow closely behind hitting .255 on the season.
Chism recorded her second homerun of the season and four RBIs over the weekend, putting her tied with Lee for second most homeruns on the season. Chism is also tied with 12 RBIs, with Zavala, to lead the Tigers in that category this season.
Memphis looks to notch a win as they begin the back half of its season, heading into conference play.
