Tigers Even Series With Cougars
Apr 22, 2023 | Baseball
With the win, Memphis improves to 20-19 (4-7) this season. The Cougars dropped to 22-17 (7-4) on the year with the loss.
"I was proud of how our guys bounced back after last night's game," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Fowler came out, threw some zeroes up and just competed the whole time. Logan [Kohler] came out and had a great day at the plate, we strung some quality at-bats together. We played great defense and took away four or five hits."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Jake Curtis put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the third inning with his third home run of the year – a solo shot to left field that put Memphis up 1-0. Logan Kohler added on with his sixth home run of the season, driving in Anthony Hansen to extend Memphis' lead to 3-0.
• Houston's Anthony Tulimero jacked a two-run home run to left field in the top of the fourth to cut Memphis' lead to one.
• The Tigers struck back for two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a Brayland Skinner double and a Curtis ground out to make the score 5-2.
• A four-run sixth inning gave the Tigers some insurance. Back-to-back triples by Skinner and Curtis resulted in the first run of the inning. Hansen then laced a two-run double to right-center field and RJ Jimerson doubled in Hansen to make the Memphis lead 9-2.
• Houston got a run in the ninth inning, but that's all they would get – making it a 9-3 win for the Tigers.
NOTABLES
• Lefty Dalton Fowler turned in another solid outing on the mound. The senior went six innings, allowed three hits, a pair of runs and notched five strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season. Fowler has allowed just three runs over his past 25 innings.
• Luke Ellis threw a hitless seventh inning in relief. David Warren pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on four hits.
• Kohler went 5-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, marking the first five-hit game for a Tiger since Darien Tubbs against Cincinnati on May 18, 2016.
• Skinner ended the game 3-for-4 with his fourth triple of the year, a double, an RBI and a run scored.
• Curtis homered and tripled, driving in three runs and scoring two.
• Hansen finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored and a double.
• Jimerson tallied a pair of hits, including an RBI double.
