Tigers Win Annual Babe Howard Classic Over UT Martin
Apr 25, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team was victorious in the annual W.S. Babe Howard Classic at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday night, defeating UT Martin 4-2. The win marked the 10th-straight for the Tigers over the Skyhawks dating back to 2011.
With the victory, Memphis improves to 21-20 (4-8 AAC) on the season.
"Great job by our guys tonight," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We had some timely hitting tonight, which is something we've been struggling to do. [Logan] Kohler had the hustle double which was huge and then a two-out hit from [Brennan] DuBose to score some runs. Then, we threw strikes and closed it out on the mound."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning by RJ Jimerson and Cameron Benson sparked Memphis for its first run of the game. A well-placed sac-bunt by Shane Cox moved both runners into scoring position for Brayland Skinner, who drove in Jimerson with a sac-fly to center field to put the Tigers up 1-0.
• Solo home runs for the Skyhawks in the third and fourth innings gave them a brief 2-1 lead over the Tigers.
• Memphis responded with a three-run fourth inning to jump back into the lead. The Tigers got their first run of the frame when Benson stole second base, and Logan Kohler, who was occupying third base, took off for home and scored on the throw down to second. Then, a two-out, two-run single by catcher Brennan DuBose brought in Benson and Skinner to give Memphis a 4-2 lead – a score that proved final.
NOTABLES
• Glenn Green III made his second start of the season on the mound and went two innings while giving up one run on three hits, also notching a pair of strikeouts.
• Jackson Lyons allowed a solo home run in the third inning but earned his first win of the season in relief to move to 1-0.
• Jake Curtis started at shortstop and moved to the mound in the ninth inning, where he allowed one hit and struck out two to earn his third save of the year.
• Skinner hit his AAC-leading fifth triple of the season in the sixth inning, missing a home run by a few inches. He ended the night 2-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
• The Tigers have hit 14 triples as a team this season to lead the AAC – five more than second-place Houston. Additionally, the Tigers rank inside the top-25 in the country in that category.
• Kohler ended the night 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
• Benson reached base safely three times to extend his team-best on-base streak to 10 games. He logged a pair of hits and a walk and scored a run.
• DuBose drove in the winning pair of runs.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers travel to Wichita, Kan., for a three-game American Athletic Conference series with the Shockers (24-15, 8-4) this weekend.
