Tigers Fall to SMU in Double Overtime

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team fought to the very end against SMU tonight, taking them to double overtime. But late free throws from the Mustangs would down the Tigers as they suffered the 91-86 loss.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in AAC play.
The Tigers got out to a quick start against the Mustangs; Memphis started the game with three consecutive baskets while picking up three steals in the first four minutes of the quarter.
Hannah Riddick put Memphis up 13-7 heading into the media timeout while Alasia Smith added in her second three-pointer of the night coming out of the timeout for the nine-point advantage. While SMU tried to cut into the Tiger lead, Madison Griggs pushed Memphis back out with a 23-14 lead heading into the second frame.
SMU came out swinging in the second quarter; a 10-0 run from the Mustangs put them up 24-23 with 5:32 left in the half. The Mustang defense held the Tigers to just 10 second quarter points, but Memphis got two free throws with less than a second left from Destyne Jackson to take the 33-32 lead into halftime.
Back-and-forth scoring from both teams left Memphis with a one point led with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter. While SMU got nine points from the free throw line, the Tigers got five consecutive points from Smith and Kai Carter to end the quarter and give Memphis the 51-50 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
It came down to the wire in the final frame of regulation, but SMU got a game-tying free throw from Tamia Jones to take the 67-67 game into overtime.
Memphis got five quick points to open overtime; Smith along with Destyne Jackson gave the Tigers a 72-67 win with 3:45 left on the clock. But the Mustangs fought their way back into the game, tying up the score once again in the final seconds of the frame.
Griggs sank one of two free throws to put Memphis up 77-75 with 25 seconds ticking down. SMU answered right back, getting a jumper from Maya Chandler before the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime.
In the end, SMU's sharp shooting from the charity stripe gave them the 91-86 win.
Hannah Riddick tied her career-high in points with a team-best 22 points on 8-14 shooting from the field while Madison Griggs, Alasia Smith and Destyne Jackson all reached double figures in scoring.
