No. 16 Tigers Clinch Regular Season Title with Draw at North Texas
Oct 27, 2024 | Women's Soccer
DENTON, Texas – The No. 16 Memphis women's soccer team and North Texas played to a stalemate Sunday night in Denton, finishing the penultimate regular season match at 0-0.
With today's result, the Tigers (11-1-3, 6-0-3 AAC) clinch a share of the regular season title as well as the No. 1 seed in the AAC Tournament, which kicks off on Nov. 4 in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. They will have the opportunity to seize the title for themselves with a victory or draw against Tulsa at home on Thursday, Oct. 31.
"In the big picture, we are regular season champions, which is great and they've earned it," said head coach Brooks Monaghan, who now boasts six regular season conference titles to go with nine tournament titles. "It's my job to make sure we are at a championship level, and tonight we weren't quite there. There are things to clean up before the postseason but I am proud of our team."
In a match with postseason implications on both sides, it was a cagey start with neither team wanting to concede an early goal. North Texas hadn't recorded a shot or even threatened to do so until the Tigers conceded a penalty in the 37th minute.
The Mean Green (7-5-5, 3-3-3 AAC) sent their talisman Rachel Roebuck to the penalty spot, but she was ousted by senior goalkeeper Kaylie Bierman who guessed the right way and saved the penalty to take the match into the break at 0-0.
Memphis looked much surer of themselves in the second half, creating down the right side through Anna Hauer, who created two shots on target but couldn't quite beat goalkeeper Hicks Bishop.
The closest the Tigers came to scoring was in the 81st minute off a corner kick routine. The ball bounced around the penalty area and found the foot of Anne-Valerie Seto, who fired it off the crossbar and back into play, where Ally Casey's shot flew just over the bar.
The Tigers will conclude regular season action at home against Tulsa this Thursday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
