Memphis Softball Hosts Blues City Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team will host DePaul, Indiana State, SIUE and Tennessee Tech in the Blues City Classic this weekend.
The Tigers (0-10) are looking to turn things around and get into the win column after dropping their midweek game against Northern Iowa Wednesday night. Freshman Abigail Morgan recorded her best game of the season in the circle, tallying six strikeouts and three walks in five innings of work against the Panthers.
"We are looking forward to being at home and having great weather for this weekend's tournament," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro. "We have a well-rounded group of teams who are solid teams in their own conferences."
Khamiyah Brown leads the team with a .300 batting average. Arianna Cox-Cole, Zoe Adebayo, Madison Berner and Brown have all recorded home runs this season. Adebayo is tops on the team with a .529 slugging percentage. Adebayo, Berner and Brown own over half of the Tigers' RBI this season, becoming key pieces at the plate. Cox-Cole continues to lead the Tigers in stolen bases, going 4-for-4 this year.
SIUE (4-4) matched up against Memphis last season in the Blues City Classic, defeating the Tigers in a close 3-0 victory on March 5. SIUE is currently boasting a three-game win streak after sweeping its weekend series at Texas A&M Commerce last weekend.
Five Cougars are hitting over .300: Lauryn Yslava (.400), Jenna Herron (.381), Paige Rocha (.355), Grace Lueke (.321) and Danielle Shuey (.308). SIUE carries a team ERA of 3.70, led by Kelsey Ray (1.35) and Sydney Baalman (2.94).
Indiana State (4-5) visited Memphis last season in the Tiger Classic, falling to the Tigers 10-9 in walk-off fashion on March 10. Indiana State put together three-straight wins before falling to St. Louis last weekend in the Tennessee State Tournament.
The Sycamores currently have five players hitting over .300: Keniz Cornwell (.412), Kennedy Shade (.364), Ana Macha (.364), Abi Chipps (.345), and Isabella Henning (.333). Indiana State sports a 5.70 team ERA in 54.0 innings of work, led by Megan Asher with a 2.63 ERA.
DePaul (0-9) has struggled out of the gate this season, showing a winless record through the first two weekends after dropping a number of close matchups.
The Blue Devils are averaging a .236 clip at the plate, with four players hitting .300 or higher: Brooke Johnson (.357), Addison Talbot (.318), Riley Pool (.304) and Bibianna Rodriguez (.300). DePaul's pitching staff has struggled to start this season posting a 6.33 ERA in 55.1 innings pitched.
Tennessee Tech (4-0) is off to a strong start this season, boasting an undefeated record after beating Norfolk State and Presbyterian College.
The Golden Eagles have five players hitting over .300: Abby Buettner (.727), Alina Schlageter (.558), Carmen Betts (.538), Abby Shoulders (.462) and Sydney Kirby (.357). Tennessee Tech has been lights out in the circle with a 1.08 team ERA behind 24 strikeouts in 26.0 innings pitched.
