Tigers Drop First of Two Midweek Games with Skyhawks

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped the first of two midweek games with UT Martin on a windy day at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday afternoon, 10-7, as the Skyhawks used a seven-run fifth inning to defeat the Tigers.

The Tigers dropped to 4-5 on the season overall with the loss while UT Martin improved to .500 (4-4).

"We have to find consistency, I think that's the biggest thing," head coach Matt Riser said. "Six of the seven runs we scored were scored via home run. We have to find a way to be more offensive. Our defensive philosophy is to eliminate the big inning, and when you do what we did [in the fifth inning], not playing defense behind our pitcher and give up a seven-run inning, it makes it extremely difficult."

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers opened the scoring on an RBI single to center field off the bat of Austin Baskin in the bottom of the first and added on in the second when Pierre Seals went deep for a two-run shot, putting Memphis up 3-0 early.
• A solo shot in the top of the third put UT Martin on the board but Seals answered for the Tigers with his second big fly of the game and fourth of the season in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-1, Memphis.
• The Skyhawks struck for the big inning in the top of the fifth, plating seven runs to go up 8-4. UT Martin's Mac Danford led off the inning with a solo shot before Tiger starter Cade Davis fanned the second batter of the inning. A single and a two-base error on a pickoff attempt to first base led to an RBI double, an RBI single, a double, a second Tiger error, an RBI double and an RBI single.
• The Skyhawks added a pair in the top of the sixth inning on their third solo home run of the game and a two-out RBI single to extend their lead to 10-4.
• Tiger first baseman Jacob Compton launched his third home run of the season – a no-doubt solo shot over the video board in right field – to cut the UT Martin lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. Solo home runs from Will Marcy in the seventh and pinch hitter Brennan DuBose with two outs in the ninth made it a 10-7 final.

NOTABLES
• The teams combined to hit eight home runs on a windy day at FedExPark. The Tigers slugged five (Seals; 2, Compton, Marcy, DuBose) to bring their season total up to 20 long balls.
• Seals logged his second multi-home-run game of the season with his two round trippers in the loss. His four home runs lead the Tigers this season. Seals' second home run of the day was measured at 103 miles-per-hour off the bat and traveled 447 feet. He ended the game 2-for-4 with the pair of jacks, three RBI and a stolen base.
• Marcy hit his first home run as a Tiger in the seventh inning and ended the day 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base to go with the solo shot.
• DuBose stayed red hot at the plate, blasting his third home run of the season in his one at-bat of the game with two outs in the ninth inning. The senior from Nashville, Tennessee raised his batting average to a team-best .364 to go with his team-leading 10 RBI and 1.281 OPS.
• Compton homered for his third of the season and ended the day 1-for-4.
• Jake Curtis went 1-for-4 with a double from the leadoff spot. Daunte Stuart and Baskin also each went 1-for-4 and Baskin drove in a run in the first inning.
