Mar 27, 2024 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to welcome American Athletic Conference newcomer Florida Atlantic to FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field for a three-game series over "Decades Weekend" to open home conference play.
Thursday's game (6 p.m.) will be available on GoTigersGo.com via audio stream with Jeff Brightwell on the call. Friday's game (6 p.m.) and Saturday's game will both be available on ESPN+.
The Tigers (12-15, 1-2 AAC) won the opening game of AAC play 16-7 over South Florida as five different Tigers homered, and Daunte Stuart hit for the cycle in a 5-for-5 effort in which he reached base all six times he came to the plate. The Bulls punched back to win the series and took the next two games from the Tigers. Tuesday night, Memphis fell to Lipscomb, 7-4.
FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field will play host to first-ever meetings between Memphis and Florida Atlantic. The Owls (14-8, 2-1 AAC) enter the weekend after winning their AAC-opening series, two games to one, over Charlotte. FAU dropped the series finale 13-1 in eight innings and did not play a midweek game this week.
The Memphis offense has lit up the scoreboard during the first month of the season and leads The American with 205 runs scored through 27 games (7.6 runs per game). The Tigers have slugged 42 long balls to lead the league and rank 27th in the nation. Memphis' 56 doubles rank 29th in the NCAA and leads the AAC, while its 256 hits are second in the league and No. 34 in the country.
The Tigers' 48 stolen bases rank second in the league and 29th nationally while their 142 walks drawn rank 33rd in the NCAA and lead the conference. Defensively, Memphis has turned the 30th-most double plays in the country (21).
Seth Cox was named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week on March 18 after a breakout week for the Tigers at the dish, batting .471 and collecting eight hits (four for extra bases) while smashing three home runs and driving in a dozen runs for a staggering 1.609 OPS on the week. He slugged a home run at No. 21 Mississippi State and another in last Friday's 16-7 win over South Florida to make it five home runs in a seven-game stretch.
Stuart (.336) leads the Tigers in batting with 36 hits while Pierre Seals is closely behind, hitting .330 with six home runs and 18 RBI. Seals leads the AAC with 12 stolen bases. Austin Baskin extended his lengthy on-base streak to 40 games dating back to last season, including all 27 games this season.
Stuart has a long streak of his own going – 45 games – dating back to last season playing for Northwestern State in the Southland Conference. The Bahamas native is No. 19 in the NCAA and leads the AAC with 11 doubles. His 31 runs scored are the second most in the league and lead the club.
Closer Brayden Sanders has recorded five saves – good for seventh-most in the country. His 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings (23 strikeouts) leads the team.
Center fielder Will Marcy is riding a 16-game on-base streak and is batting .301 on the year with five doubles, a home run and nine RBI from the top of the Tiger lineup. The speedy N.C. State transfer has added six stolen bases while fielding 1.000.
Memphis will roll out the same weekend rotation it has ridden the entirety of the season, with RHP David Warren (3-1, 5.24 ERA) set to get the Thursday start, LHP Luke Ellis (0-3, 6.48 ERA) slated to throw Friday and RHP Caden Robinson (1-2, 6.58 ERA) on the bump in Saturday's finale.
The Owls will counter with one of the best weekend staffs in the conference. RHP CJ Williams (4-0, 3.18 ERA) will get the nod Thursday night, RHP Tyler Murphy (3-0, 1.80 ERA) will start Friday and lefty Trey Beard (1-2, 5.64 ERA) will throw the Saturday finale. Offensively, Florida Atlantic is led by John Schroeder (.312 BA, 3 HR, 21 RBI) and Spencer Rich (.308 BA, 8 SB).
