Tigers Run Rule UAPB, 17-2
Apr 30, 2024 | Baseball
The Tigers snapped an eight-game skid to improve to 19-26 overall (6-12 American) with the win as the Golden Lions dropped to 14-30 overall.
"It's good to feel the winning side of things again after a tough couple of weeks for us," head coach Matt Riser said. "The offense did what it was supposed to do and scored some runs and I thought we pitched pretty well out of the bullpen."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Golden Lions got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning on an attempted first and third double steal play to go up 1-0.
• The Tigers responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning – all scoring with two outs. Brennan DuBose came in to score on a balk for Memphis' first run of the game before a two-run home run down the left-field line by Austin Baskin made the score 3-1, Tigers. Daunte Stuart then came to the plate and made it back-to-back bombs with his solo blast to put Memphis up 4-1.
• An RBI ground out in the bottom of the third inning by Alex Fernandes drove in Jake Curtis to push the Memphis lead to 5-1.
• The Tigers struck for back-to-back six-run innings in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, the first run came in to score on an error by the UAPB shortstop before Shane Cox singled through the left side to drive in DuBose. Fernandes then slashed a two-run triple down the right-field line. An RBI single by Baskin drove in the next run before slugger Jacob Compton came to the plate and ripped an RBI triple off the center-field batter's eye to make it a pair of three-baggers in the inning for Memphis, who entered the game with just three on the season as a squad.
• Memphis continued where it left off and started the six-run fifth inning with a two-run double by Fernandes to give him a five-RBI game. Shane Cox scored on a passed ball, Stuart drove in a run with an infield single and then Compton mashed his league-leading 13th long ball of the season, a two-run shot to put the Tigers on top, 17-1.
• A solo home run by UAPB's Brandon Simon in the top of the sixth inning gave the Golden Lions a second run, but that would be all it got as the Tigers took it by a final of 17-2 in seven innings.
NOTABLES
• Compton ended the game 3-for-4 and a double shy of the cycle. His home run was his league-leading 13th of the season. He added to his team lead with three RBI to bring his season total to 45.
• Stuart ended the game 2-for-3 with his sixth home run of the season and a pair of RBI. He extended his on-base streak to 16 games and has now reached base safely in 62 of his past 63 games dating back to last season.
• Fernandes nearly matched his season total in RBI (6), driving in five runs from the leadoff spot in a 2-for-5 effort with a triple and a double. He also scored twice.
• Baskin ended the game 2-for-3 with his seventh long ball of the season and has now homered in back-to-back games. He drove in three runs and scored twice, also drawing a pair of walks.
• DuBose had a pair of hits including a double to go with a pair of runs scored.
• Shane Cox, Jonah Sutton and Pierre Seals all tallied a hit in the win. Cox scored three times, stole a base and walked once, Sutton scored a run and Seals swiped his 15th bag of the campaign.
• Jake Curtis didn't record a hit but scored three times, walked twice and stole his 13th base of the season.
• Left-handed starter JT Durham was credited with the win to improve to 4-1 on the season after two innings of two-hit, one-run baseball.
• Malik Harris, Jackson Lyons, Jonah Posey and Ethan Vandament combined to pitch the final five frames and allowed just one run on a pair of hits while striking out seven.
