MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It was a record-breaking semester in the classroom for University of Memphis student-athletes this spring, as they set the all-time departmental grade point average record with a 3.395. It also marked the 22nd-consecutive term with a 3.0 or higher departmental GPA and was the fifth-straight semester with a 3.2 or higher GPA.
Additionally, Memphis student-athletes completed over 4,600 hours of community service in 2023-24, contributing an estimated economic impact of $155,000 to Memphis and the surrounding regions. Memphis' football and baseball programs both finished sixth in the nation in their respective sports in service hours as recorded via national tracking service Helper Helper.
"You could hardly find a better way to quantify the all-around abilities of our student-athletes at the University of Memphis than by what happened this past semester in the classroom and over this entire year out in our community," Memphis Interim Athletics Director Jeff Crane said. "A record semester grade point average is a tremendous achievement, and seeing so many student-athletes and coaches share a vision of giving back to the community we call home at this level is truly inspiring. While also excelling in competition, Memphis student-athletes are the whole package and bring extraordinary value to our University, our City and our region as a whole."
In the spring, the Tigers had 273 student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, 156 earn Dean's List honors (3.5 or higher) and 68 in the 4.0 GPA Club. A total of 16 programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
Along with the departmental high GPA mark, both the football (3.24) and men's soccer teams (3.622) set program-best marks in the classroom this past semester. The cross country team posted the highest spring GPA for women's teams with a 3.823, while the tennis squad had the best spring GPA for men's teams with a 3.75. Additionally, the cheer team posted a semester GPA of 3.29, while pom had a spring GPA of 3.17.
