MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis junior linebacker Elijah Herring was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Defensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday.
In just his second game as a Tiger, Herring had a career day. The junior was in on eight tackles, with two tackles-for-loss, a sack and a forced fumble which he recovered to help Memphis to a dominant 38-17 win over back-to-back Sun Belt champion Troy. With the victory, the No. 25 Tigers improved to 2-0 for the 11th-consecutive season. This marks the second Defensive Player of the Week honor for Herring, as he also received The American's version of the award on Monday.
On the season, Herring is second on the squad with a dozen tackles, leads the team with a pair of sacks and shares the team lead with Chandler Martin with three tackles for loss.
The Tigers go on the road to Tallahassee, Florida, for their first road game of the season against preseason No. 10 Florida State (0-2) on September 14 with kick scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.
