No. 6/8 Tigers Overpower Iowa State, 4-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The No. 6/8 Memphis women's soccer team picked up their nation-best 14th consecutive home victory on Sunday night, fending off Iowa State in a 4-2 contest at the Track and Soccer Stadium.Â
The Tigers (4-0) are one of fourteen Division-I teams with a flawless record in the 2024 season, winning by multiple goals in three of their four games.Â
"It was a gritty win against a good Power-4 team," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "It wasn't perfect, but to see us respond quickly in tough moments was great."Â
Memphis' early control of the match paid off with a goal in the sixth minute, as Maddie Eskin isolated a defender on the left wing and drove a shot towards the far post. It smacked off crossbar and landed at the feet of Anna Hauer who did not waste the chance to give the Tigers an early lead, their first goal in the first half since the season-opener versus Alabama A&M.Â
The Tigers appeared to be in cruise control after a corner kick resulted in a Momo Nakao goal in the 17th minute. Iowa State (2-2-1) proved to be a difficult knock-out, though, as they found a similar goal just two minutes later on more corner-kick chaos to make the score 2-1.Â
The highlight of the night came in the 24th minute when Ashley Henderson flicked a cross with the back of heel into the far corner of the goal to extend the lead and give the sophomore her third goal of the year.Â
An impressive long-range goal from Iowa State's Lauren McConnell narrowed the Tiger lead early in the second half, but once again, Memphis responded swiftly. A well-worked move right after the kick-off ended at the right foot of Hauer, who logged her first career collegiate brace. Â
After six goals in 56 minutes, the game settled down in the final half-hour. The Tigers totaled 18 shots and held the Cyclones to six.Â
Memphis will host another Big 12 opponent in their next bout, taking on Kansas State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
