Tigers Drop Four-Set Match to UAB

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (10-16, 1-10 American) dropped a four-set match to UAB (9-14, 2-9 American) inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UAB opened the first set on a 7-1 run with four blocks from Jorda Crook and Addyson Smock. Sydney Marshall, Janyah Henderson and Brianna Washington combined for six kills for the Tigers, but the Blazers stayed in control with 13 total kills to take the set, 25-14.
The Blazers started the second set with a 3-1 lead before a Jasmyn Tate kill and a service ace from Maddy Bach tied the score at 3-3. The teams battled point-for-point, tying the set 10 times. Memphis and UAB each posted back-to-back 3-0 runs, highlighted by kills from Zaniah Hoskins and Henderson. Late kills from Mia Reese, Abby Jones and Crook secured the set for UAB, 25-20.
Memphis came out strong in the third set, jumping ahead 7-3 behind kills from Hoskins, Henderson and Washington. UAB responded with several kills from Jones, Reese, Crook and Smock to tie it at 11. Hoskins then recorded three consecutive kills to spark a 5-0 run and a 16-11 Memphis lead. The Blazers cut the margin with a pair of 3-0 runs, but Hoskins and Za'Niya Boyles sealed the set for the Tigers, 25-23.
UAB opened the fourth set with a 5-2 run before Memphis answered with four straight points for a 6-5 advantage, capped by kills from Riley McCloskey, Boyles and Hoskins. Both teams traded points until Memphis pulled ahead 16-12. Reese led a 3-0 Blazer run to pull within one. A service ace and a late Tate kill gave the Tigers a four-point cushion, but UAB capitalized on three Memphis attack errors to tie the score at 23. Hoskins answered with a kill, but a service error and a Crook kill gave the Blazers set point. Crook and Jones closed the match with back-to-back kills to give UAB the 27-25 win.

- Zaniah Hoskins led the Tigers with 18 kills and 19 points.
- Both marks led all participants in the match despite the loss.
- She has recorded 15-plus kills in seven matches this season.
- The freshman tied her conference high with 18 kills.
- Hoskins was one of five Tigers with five or more kills, joining Za'Niya Boyles (nine), Janyah Henderson (eight), Jasmyn Tate (five) and Brianna Washington (five).
- This is the seventh time this season where five Tigers have five or more kills.
- Three Memphis players (Hoskins, Boyles, Henderson) finished with at least 10 points.
- Setters Sydney Marshall and Maddy Bach tallied 24 and 18 assists, respectively.
- Marshall has now recorded 20-plus assists in eight matches this season.
- Henderson added four block assists in tonight's match.
- Abigail Schlueter led the defense with 16 digs and recorded her 100th career service ace.
- Schlueter's 16 digs were tied for the most by any player in the match.
