JONESBORO, Ark. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped a midweek game to Arkansas State, 4-2, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on Tuesday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.
The loss marked the first time this season the Tigers have dropped consecutive games, going to 9-7 overall. A-State improved to 7-9 with the win and has now won four in a row.
"Really disappointing loss," head coach Matt Riser said. "I really thought today would be a different kind of coming out party for us … We have to be better and we have to be tougher."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Red Wolves struck first in the top of the second inning when Ashton Quiller tripled to right field with two outs to score Raul Torres.
• Memphis got a run back in the top of the third inning on a Shane Cox sac-fly that drove in Seth Cox to even the game at a run apiece.
• The Red Wolves regained the lead on a Tiger error in the bottom half of the third to make it 2-1.
• In the top of the eighth, Memphis got a run on an error by A-State shortstop Patrick Engskov when Jonah Sutton put a ball in play and James Smith IV came in to score, tying the game at 2-2.
• On an 0-2 count with two down and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, A-State's Cross Jumper shot a ball back up the middle that scored a pair to give the Red Wolves a 4-2 lead.
• Seth Cox led off the top of the ninth with a single for his fourth hit of the game, but the Tigers went down quietly otherwise, dropping the game 4-2.
