Tigers Fall to UAB at the Buzzer
Feb 10, 2026 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Memphis women's basketball fell, 58-56, at UAB on Tuesday night as Amauri Williams' game-winning three-pointer hit the front rim as the buzzer sounded.
The Tigers (8-15, 2-8 American) went on a 16-4 run across the third and fourth quarters to take a three-point lead, but UAB (10-14, 3-9 American) regained the advantage and closed it out for their third win in four games. Birmingham native Tamya Smith led the team in points (15) and rebounds (seven).
Without starting guard Daejah Richmond (foot), Memphis still managed to limit its turnovers to 10 while forcing 20. The biggest difference came behind the three-point line, where UAB made 11 long balls fueled by a 22-point, six-three performance from Cali Smallwood.
The visitors punched first on the road, leading 10-2 after just four minutes after Smith converted her only three of the evening. After making four of their first seven field goals, Memphis missed eight of its last nine to end the quarter, with UAB closing the quarter out on a 10-2 run to take its first lead.
The Blazers' momentum carried into the following quarters, leading by as much as 36-25 right out of halftime before Williams sparked a 5-0 run with an old-fashioned three-point play. As has been the case for most of the season, the Tiger defense fueled them as they chipped away; UAB went on a six-minute drought, missing nine straight before Sofia Munoz scored on their final possession of the quarter to take a 41-36 lead.
Smith responded immediately with the final bucket of the quarter, and two three-pointers in quick succession from Chaé Harris gave Memphis its first lead of the half with six minutes to play. Smallwood responded with two threes of her own to regain the lead and spark an 8-2 run.
Williams converted her fifth lay-up of the game to cut it to one with less than a minute remaining, but UAB hit another clutch three-pointer, this time through Jordan Rosier for her eighth trey of the year. Jordan Hunter responded with a three of her own to cut it to one with four seconds remaining, but after Rosier split a pair at the line, Williams' three-pointer came up just short at the horn.
UAB turned nine offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points, with four of their 11 threes coming off offensive boards. Smith, Hunter and Cori Allen each played over 37 minutes with both Richmond and Paris Gaines out with injuries.
The Tigers will be back home this Saturday, February 14, to take on Charlotte. Proceeds for tickets will go to the Play4Kay foundation and can be purchased HERE.
