Memphis Drops Series Finale to Jacksonville State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (3-8) baseball team fell 7-1 to Jacksonville State (10-2) on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the weekend series.
After Jacksonville State took an early lead Memphis starter David Case settled in for five innings of work, allowing two runs. Jax State starter Beau Bryans pitched five innings of his own, allowing one unearned run as the game went into the seventh inning with the Gamecocks up 2-1. Jax State pitchers did not give up a hit in the final three innings while the Gamecocks scored two runs in the seventh and eighth and another in the ninth to sweep the Tigers on the weekend.
The Tigers will travel to Ole Miss for their second away midweek game on Tuesday, March 3. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. in Oxford, Mississippi.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jacksonville State started quickly again after a Trey King leadoff home run that barely escaped right fielder James Smith IV's glove put the Gamecocks up 1-0.
- Jax State put runners on again in the third, scoring a second run on a Grayson Ashe RBI single in the third inning.
- Memphis got the lead runner on in the third and the fourth before hitting into double plays in both innings and not plating a run.
- The Tigers broke through in sixth when Javon Hernandez scored after a Jax State throwing error on a stolen base by Freddy Hernandez.
- The Gamecocks doubled their lead in the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits and a Memphis error.
- After a Caleb Johnson two-run home run in the seventh, Jax State grew its lead to 6-1.
- Memphis struggled offensively in the late innings, as Jax State took a 7-1 run into the ninth and held on for the game three win.

- Jacksonville State scored two of its seven runs with two outs in the inning. 43 of the 87 runs allowed by the Tigers have come with two outs (49.4%).
- Freddy Rodriguez stole a base for the Tigers, bringing the team's season total to 26 steals, which ranks in the top 20 nationally and first in the American. Rodriguez is 8-for-9 on stolen base attempts this season and has stolen a base in six different games.
