Memphis Heads to Ole Miss for Midweek SEC Matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (3-8) baseball team will take on Ole Miss (10-2) in its second road game of the season on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. in Oxford, Mississippi.
This will be the 109th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Ole Miss leading the series 67-41. The Tigers and Rebels most recently met on April 8 of last year in Memphis. At the time, Ole Miss was ranked sixth in the country and defeated the Tigers 10-0.
Memphis (3-8) is coming off three losses to Jacksonville State over the weekend. On Friday, Memphis fell 10-1 to the Gamecocks, who scored nine runs in the middle innings to take control of the game. On Saturday, Shane Cox and Webb Watson both hit homers in a 9-4 loss. Jax State Sunday starter Beau Bryans pitched five innings and allowed no earned runs as the Gamecocks scored five runs in the final three innings to win 7-1 and complete the sweep.
The Tigers swiped another two bags during the weekend, bringing their total to 26 on the season. Memphis ranks first in the American Conference in stolen bases and 33rd nationally. Third baseman Freddy Rodriguez leads the team with eight and is ranked 27th nationally.
Memphis has now hit 14 home runs on the season, good for 60th in the nation. Left fielder Webb Watson and center fielder Michael Gupton lead the team with three apiece.
Infielder Shane Cox has been Memphis' top offensive performer to start the season. Cox leads the team in batting average (.422), on-base percentage (.469), hits (19), doubles (4) and RBIs (11). Cox also has a hit in 10 of 11 games thus far.
Ole Miss (10-2) went 1-2 this weekend, competing in the Bruce Bolt College Classic in Houston, Texas. On Friday they suffered a 6-5 loss in 10 innings to Baylor. The Rebels then shutout Ohio State 8-0 on Saturday afternoon before ending the tournament with a 9-2 loss to No. 9 Coastal Carolina.
LHP Isaac Lucas (0-0, 16.20 ERA) will make his first start this season after allowing six earned runs in his two appearances against Toledo and Louisiana Tech. The Rebels will throw RHP Owen Kelly (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who has pitched six innings allowing no runs on five hits so far this season.
Ole Miss is led offensively by Judd Utermark (13 H / 6 HR / 13 RBI), Tristan Bissetta (20 H / 5 HR / 19 RBI) and Collin Reuter (.472 AVG / 17 H / 12 RBI). The Rebels rank eighth in the nation in home runs with 23 so far this season.
