Tigers Drop Series Opener Against UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Memphis (7-17, 0-4 American) softball team suffered a 14-3 run-rule loss to UTSA (15-12, 4-0 American) in the opening game of its series Friday evening.
Memphis jumped out to an early lead that was erased in the first inning and UTSA's 10-run third inning was a deficit that the Tigers were unable to overcome.

The Tigers look to rebound in game two of the series, set for a 1 p.m. start tomorrow.

Memphis jumped out to an early lead that was erased in the first inning and UTSA's 10-run third inning was a deficit that the Tigers were unable to overcome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- As the road team, Memphis jumped out to a quick two-run lead on an RBI triple by Faith Brown and a single by Kennedy Semien to score Brown.
- Brown's triple brought Ariel Davis home, who doubled to lead off the game.
- The Roadrunners answered with a four-run bottom half on a pair of home runs, a solo shot by Skylar Rucker and a three-run home run by Samantha Mundine.
- After a strikeout to begin the bottom of the third, UTSA loaded the bases and brought in 10 runs on four RBI singles, a pair of walks, a hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch.
- Memphis stranded runners at first and second in the fourth after Aubrey Williams reached on a single and Deana Cunningham was hit by a pitch.
- Memphis put up one run in the fifth but was unable to cut far enough into the deficit to extend the game.
- Paris Brienesse scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Kennedy Semien.

- The lone pair of Tigers to reach base twice in the game were Neely Taylor and Deana Cunningham.
- Taylor drew a pair of walks while Cunningham walked and was hit by a pitch.
- Ariel Davis was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the first inning.
- Davis moves back into the top spot with a .366 batting average on her 26th hit of the year.
- She also moves into a tie with Jasmine Mack for the team lead in doubles with five.
- Faith Brown went 1-for-3 in the game, recording her lone hit and RBI on a triple in the first, also coming around to score in the same inning.
- Brown's triple was Memphis' eighth as a team this season.
- Her lone RBI pushes her into a tie with Davis for the team lead with 12.
- Kennedy Semien logged one hit and two RBI in the loss, coming on a single and a groundout.
- Semien's now 11 RBI put her tied for third-most on the team.
- Aubrey Williams picked up her 10th hit of the season in the loss.
- In the circle, Avery Stutts and Taylor Caton each picked up two strikeouts.
The Tigers look to rebound in game two of the series, set for a 1 p.m. start tomorrow.
