Memphis Falls to Charlotte Saturday; Dugar Makes 100th Career Appearance

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Memphis (14-29, 3-14 American) softball team fell by a score of 8-5 to Charlotte (24-19, 9-8 American) in the Saturday game of the series.
After falling behind 5-2, Memphis stormed back with a three-run fourth inning before Charlotte pulled away with three unanswered runs and by stranding three Memphis runners in the final three innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Memphis was on the board quickly to start the game, with Faith Brown sending the first pitch she saw over the wall in right field.
- Taniyah Brown induced three outs after allowing the first two runners to reach in the top half to get through the inning scoreless.
- Two Tigers, Kayla Clement and Deana Cunningham, reached in the second on a hit and hit-by-pitch, respectively. The pair were stranded as two of the next three batters struck out.
- Charlotte tied the game with a bunt attempt resulting in a throwing error by Taniyah Brown that allowed a run to score.
- Rylee Dugar entered in relief, where two Charlotte runners were thrown out at home to keep the game tied at one run apiece.
- A successful safety squeeze by Zereniti Sousa scored Faith Brown to give Memphis the lead.
- Brown reached on a single to lead off the inning.
- Charlotte answered back with a four-run third inning on a two-run home run, a single and an RBI double.
- Memphis tied the game at five on one swing by Faith Brown, that brought herself, Deana Cunningham and Kennedy Semien to score after Charlotte's outfielders collided on the play.
- The 49ers took the lead back on a solo home run by Jenna Lord.
- The Tigers stranded two in the fifth inning as Kayla Clement and Deana Cunningham both singled and were stranded for a second time in the game.
- Charlotte extended its lead to three runs after a wild pitch and an RBI single.
- Zereniti Sousa led off the top of the seventh with a first-pitch single, but the next three batters went down in order to end the game.
- After today, the Tigers have 37 sacrifice hits, which would rank fourth in the NCAA.
- Memphis' now 32 hit-by-pitches rank fourth in single-season program history.
- Memphis now has 53 stolen bases on the year, tied for the ninth-most in a season and the second-most under head coach Trena Prater.
- The Tigers now have 12 sacrifice flies on the year, the fifth-highest single-season mark in program history.
- The second game of the doubleheader was Memphis' ninth 10-plus hit game as a team this season and was the fourth time this season that the Tigers put up at least 10 runs in a game.
- Faith Brown was 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and three runs scored in the loss.
- She is now tied with Ariel Davis for the team lead with six home runs and is one RBI away from 30 on the season.
- Brown also becomes the second Tiger this season with 40 hits.
- Kayla Clement logged her third multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.
- Clement is now hitting .290 in limited opportunities.
- Zereniti Sousa was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk in the game.
- Deana Cunningham was 1-for-2, reaching three times while also drawing a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
- Cunningham is the fourth Tiger this season to reach 20 runs scored.
- Mya Clark reached twice with a hit and a walk.
- Isabella Hune logged a hit in the loss.
- Kennedy Semien recorded one run scored.
- Ariel Davis went 1-for-4 for a second game in a row.
- Rylee Dugar made her 100th career pitching appearance, becoming the fifth Tigers in program history to reach that mark.
- Avery Stutts tossed four innings of relief in her 27th outing of the season, striking out one.
