Memphis Visits UAB for Three-Game Conference Set

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis (15-24, 7-8 American) baseball team will head to Birmingham, Alabama to take on the second place UAB Blazers (26-15, 10-5 American) in a weekend series starting Friday at 5:05 p.m.
Memphis holds a 49-44 advantage in the all-time series with UAB. This weekend's matchup will represent the 84th, 85th and 86th all-time meetings between the two programs. The Tigers welcomed the Blazers to FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field last season and completed a three-game sweep, winning by scores of 2-0, 12-10 and 2-1.
Memphis (15-24, 7-8 American) has won its last four conference games going back to the series finale against Florida Atlantic but suffered a 6-2 defeat at No. 15 Mississippi State on Tuesday night. In that game, Memphis totaled 10 hits but left 11 runners on base, while Mississippi State capitalized on key opportunities late, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning to pull away. The Tigers struck first and later tied the game in the fifth, but the Bulldogs answered with runs in the sixth and eighth to secure the win.
Memphis has been aggressive on the basepaths all season, racking up 89 stolen bases to lead the American Conference and rank 34th nationally. Leading the charge is senior Freddy Rodriguez, who is 31-for-35 in stolen base attempts, topping the league and ranking fourth in the country. Rodriguez is nine stolen bases away from breaking the single-season stolen base record for the Tigers.
A total of 14 Tigers have gone deep this season, combining for 44 home runs as a team. Senior center fielder Michael Gupton leads the club with 11 homers, ranking third in the conference, while his .629 slugging percentage is good for fifth in the American.
UAB (26-15, 10-5 American) is fresh off a midweek upset over No. 13 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. UAB surged ahead with a seven-run first inning, as eight straight batters reached base after the opening out. The Blazers extended the lead to 9-0 by the fourth, with all nine starters crossing the plate. Alabama got on the board with a two-run homer in the sixth, but UAB answered with two more runs in the seventh. The Blazers also capitalized on defensive miscues, scoring four runs off errors. UAB held on from there, closing out an 11-2 win.
On the mound, the Tigers will maintain their weekend rotation, giving the ball to RHP Will Howell (4-5, 6.56 ERA) on Friday, followed by LHP David Case (3-6, 5.51 ERA) on Saturday with Sunday yet to be determined. UAB will counter with RHP Mason Steele (4-2, 3.88 ERA) in the series opener and Saturday and Sunday's starters to be announced.
At the plate, UAB has been led by American Conference home run leader John Paul Head (14 HR / 41 H / 40 RBI), Alex Dupuy (45 H / 10 2B / 28 RBI) and Andrew Hunt (.313 AVG / 42 H / 30 RBI). As a team, the Blazers rank 36th in walks (221) and 50th in home runs (54).
