Kim Leads Memphis in Opening Day of NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The University of Memphis men's golf team completed day one of the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa on Friday.

The Tigers finished round one shooting a 13-over-par 301 to sit in 27th place. No. 30 UCLA leads the field after day one, posting an 8-under-par 280. Memphis remains within striking distance of the cut line, sitting just nine strokes behind a three-way tie for 15th place held by No. 18 Tennessee, No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 23 Georgia.

The top 15 teams after Sunday's third round, along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, will move on to the final round of stroke play on Monday.

Sophomore Tobey Kim paced the Tigers, finishing as the only Memphis player under par. Kim carded a 1-under-par 71 to put himself in a tie for 25th place. Yixiang Wang followed with a 4-over-par 76, while Christian Morneau and Diego Lourenco both shot a 5-over-par 77 to share 116th place.

Cian O'Connor rounded out the Memphis lineup with an 8-over-par 80, placing him in a tie for 146th.

The Tigers return to the course tomorrow for the second round of the NCAA Championships, with their first tee time scheduled for 1:40 p.m. PST / 3:40 p.m. CST.
