MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis women's tennis is welcoming back former Tiger standout Camila Soares to the coaching staff for the 2026-27 season, head coach Hayden Perez announced Tuesday.
"Ryan Haymond and I are excited to have Camila back as part of the program. The experience she has gained as a coach the last two years will be valuable to us and our program. She is a proud Memphis graduate and brings a sense of Tiger Pride back with her and can help pass that on to the young team!" said Perez.
Soares returns to Memphis after spending the past two seasons as a graduate assistant with the University of Tulsa women's tennis program, where she gained valuable coaching experience while helping develop student-athletes both on and off the court.
Before beginning her coaching career, Soares enjoyed a successful playing career with the Tigers from 2020-24. A native of Lima, Peru, she compiled career records of 29-21 in singles play and 25-31 in doubles competition while helping Memphis remain among the top programs in the American Athletic Conference.
During her senior season in 2023-24, Soares played primarily at the No. 1 singles position and helped lead the Tigers to a No. 51 national ranking. Memphis advanced to the American Athletic Conference Championship match that season before falling to SMU.
One of the defining moments of Soares' career came during Memphis' 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship run. Playing at No. 5 singles, Soares delivered the match-clinching victory that secured the conference title and earned the Tigers an NCAA Tournament berth.
Following the championship season, Soares earned 2022-23 All-AAC honors after establishing herself as one of the conference's top performers.
Soares joins the Tigers as they prepare for the 2026-27 season, bringing firsthand knowledge of the program's championship culture and a deep connection to Memphis Women's Tennis.
