Memphis Volleyball Drops Saturday Match at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Memphis volleyball team (0-2) fell to Vanderbilt (2-0) inside Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening frame, Memphis and Vanderbilt went point-for-point through the first 12 points before the Tigers took control with a 3-0 run initiated by a Lily Hamilton kill. Vanderbilt capitalized on a pair of Memphis attack errors, but the Tigers pushed ahead to a 23-19 lead following kills from Arianna Mongare and Dawn Moore. The Commodores closed the frame on a 6-0 run to steal the first set, 25-23. The opening set featured 12 ties.
The Commodores carried that momentum into the second set. Ahead early, Vanderbilt used a 4-0 run and a 5-0 spurt to build a 15-5 advantage, benefiting from four Tigers errors alongside kills from Kayla Dunlap and Reese Animashaun. Zaniah Hoskins and Kaylee Parker answered with kills for Memphis, but Vanderbilt pulled away with another 4-0 run to seal the set, 25-13.
Vanderbilt kept the pressure on in the third set, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. A solo block from Sydney Marshall and kills from Caitlyn Little and Mongare trimmed the deficit, but Vanderbilt responded with attacks from Dunlap, Animashaun and Samantha Wunsch. Kills from Little, Moore and Parker brought Memphis back within two points late, but Wunsch and Maya Witherspoon answered to close out the match, 25-22.

Memphis returns to Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University to face the College of Charleston on Sunday, Aug. 30. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
