Mackay, Kitagawa Earn American Conference Weekly Honors; Forsgren, Galani Named Honorable Mentions

IRVING, Texas – University of Memphis women's soccer players Evelyn Mackay and Ai Kitagawa earned American Conference weekly honors on Monday, with Mackay being named Defensive Player of the Week and Kitagawa earning Midfielder of the Week. Abby Forsgren and Ava Galani also received honorable mentions.
Mackay, a junior defender from Saint-Hubert, Canada, played a key role on both ends of the field in Memphis' 3-1 road victory over Ole Miss on Thursday. She recorded three points in the win, assisting on Kitagawa's opening goal in the ninth minute before finding the back of the net herself just three minutes later to give the Tigers an early 2-0 advantage.
Mackay's goal, a long-distance strike in the 12th minute, was the second of her career, while her assist on Kitagawa's opener marked the first of her collegiate career and completed her first multi-point performance.
Kitagawa continued her strong start to the season with a three-point performance against the Rebels. The junior midfielder opened the scoring in the ninth minute, firing a shot from well outside the box over the Ole Miss goalkeeper for her third goal of the season and 19th of her career. The goal also gave Kitagawa 50 total points in her Memphis career.
The Itami City, Hyogo, Japan, native later helped put the match away in the 76th minute, delivering a corner kick that Forsgren headed home to give Memphis a 3-1 advantage. The assist was Kitagawa's second of the season and 13th of her career.
Forsgren earned an honorable mention after scoring the first goal of her collegiate career in the victory. The freshman headed home Kitagawa's service in the 76th minute to provide the Tigers with their third and final goal of the night.
Galani also received an honorable mention after playing the full 90 minutes in net, making four saves to help the Tigers secure the 3-1 road victory. Galani earned the third win of her career and her first over a Power Four opponent.
