(Read about Coach Storms' work with the Tigers here)
In 2018, Storms earned Master Strength and Conditioning Coach distinction by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa). The honor is the highest given in the strength and conditioning coaching profession.
Storms has played an integral role in the overall development of the Memphis football program under head coach Mike Norvell. The Tigers produced the program’s third 10-win season in school history in 2017 and set numerous school records for offensive production.Â
Last season’s Tigers oblierated the program’s offensive record book with season marks for points (592), total plays (941), total yards (6,917), passing yards (4,355), offensive touchdowns (72) and passing touchdowns (39). The 2017 Memphis offense became the first in program history to have a 4,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard rusher and 1,000-yard receiver in the same season.
The Tigers defense has been the nation’s most-opportunistic unit the last two years, forcing a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) second-best 60 turnovers (31 in 2016/29 in 2017). The 31 caused turnovers were tied for third nationally in 2017, and the 29 forced in 2016 were tied for fifth nationally.
At Arizona State, Storms’ focus was on football in his position of Sports Performance Assistant Head Coach. He developed and enhanced the performance of student-athletes who advanced to a school-record five straight bowl games in his final five seasons in Tempe.
Over his last four years at ASU, Storms worked with Mike Norvell in advancing student-athletes’ performance for the Sun Devils’ high-octane offense.
Ahead of Arizona State’s game against West Virginia in the 2015 Motel 6 Cactus Bowl, the Sun Devils ranked second in the Pac-12 and 11th in the nation in scoring at 37.37 points per game over the past four years. ASU ranked second in the Pac-12 and 12th in the nation with 1,943 total points during that stretch of time.
Defensively, Arizona State finished with 27 takeaways in 2014 (2.1 per game) after having a streak of 29 consecutive games forcing a turnover come to an end in the season opener. ASU led the Pac-12 with 33 takeaways in 2013, finishing fifth nationally.
The Sun Devils forced 109 turnovers in Storms’ last four seasons. Arizona State had 13 interception returns for touchdowns during that four-year stretch, leading the nation in most interception returns for touchdowns over that span. The Sun Devils also led the FBS with 16 defensive touchdowns over those four seasons.
Storms joined the Arizona State staff in January 2005 after working two-plus years as an assistant strength coach at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. In addition to assisting with the football team, he worked with UNLV’s track and field, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis teams.
Prior to his tenure at UNLV, Storms was a seasonal assistant strength coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2001.
Storms graduated from the University of South Dakota (2001), where he played tight end. He completed his master’s degree at Arizona State in 2006.Â
A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Storms is married to the former Darcie Dreeszen, and they have one son, Colt. Storms is certified through both the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
