Tiger Volleyball Drops Home Contest to Charlotte

Memphis, Tenn. -- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (7-16, 0-10) dropped its 10th conference loss to Charlotte, 6-15, 14-16, 15-12, 11-15, at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Sunday.
Led by senior Ozlem Ayture, the 49ers came out and hit .458 in the opening game. Ayture had five kills in game one alone, finishing with 12 for the match. The two-time all-conference setter posted a triple double with 12 kills, 48 assists and 17 digs.
Memphis hit a game high .270 in game two and was up 12-7 before Charlotte came back to take game two 16-14.
Memphis' blocking game and defense got going in game three, holding Charlotte to a game-low .179 hitting percentage, while the Tigers hit .242. Freshmen Laura Stoke and Heather Sanders and junior Adrianne Edmonds stepped in to help Memphis scramble for some points. Memphis was again up when Charlotte pulled even at 12 apiece. But unlike game two, the Tigers stood their ground, with two Emily Eichmann kills wrapping up game three, 15-12.
After some timely kills from Tiger freshman Brittany Barnett in games two and three, the Tigers struggled in game four, knocking 10 attacks out of play and hitting .029 in a 15-11 game four loss. Barnett posted 10 kills in the loss, while senior April Harriman led the team with 18 kills. Eichman posted her third double-digit kill effort in four games with 17kills andled all players with five service aces.
Christy Galvin led Charlotte with 21 kills, while Esra Akgun added 18 and Courtney Burg added 14 in the win. Charlotte is now 11-12 overalland 5-6 in Conference USA.
The Tigers remain home for a non-conference match against Middle Tennessee State, Tuesday at 7 p.m.
