Memphis, Tenn.-- - In a match that featured two young teams with strong blocking games, the University of Memphis Tiger volleyball team defeated Middle Tennessee State, 3-2, in a non-conference clash, Tuesday. The two hour and 45 minute match went to five games, with neither team winning by more than five points.
Game one was a mark of what was to come, with both teams struggling with their offense. MTSU won the game despite hitting .135, while the Tigers hit .059 in a 15-13 loss.
Memphis regrouped to win games two and three, 15-10 and 15-12, hitting a match-high .245 in game two. The Tigers were up 9-4 in game two when the Lady Raiders stormed back to tie the game at 10 apiece. But behind 26 kills from senior April Harriman and 18 apiece from Emily Eichmann and Adrianne Edmonds, Memphis held off MTSU for a 15-10 win.
Game four was where Edmonds made another big impact. After making her first start of the season for the Tigers, the outside hitter tallied her first double-double as a Tiger with 18 kills and 21 digs. One of Edmonds' four blocks was an assisted block with freshman Brittany Barnett that brought the Tigers back to 5-5. The lead changed hands six times after that, with both teams finally knotting at 13-13 before MTSU watched two Tiger attacks sail long for a 15-13 MTSU game four win.
The rally game was all Memphis, with the Tigers taking advantage of two Lady Raider service errors and a scrambling Tiger defense to put the match away with a 15-10 win.
Four Tigers had double-digit kills in their eighth win of the season--Edmonds, junior Amie Hamilton, Harriman and Barnett. Barnett led Memphis with six blocks, including one solo. The freshman is currently ranked fifth in the conference in blocks per game and has started every match of her first collegiate campaign.
Sophomore Katie Thiesen, an Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman team honoree, led MTSU with 31 kills. Alicia Scott and Lindsay Pritchard added 17 and 10 kills, respectively. Five Lady Raiders posted double-digit kills, led by 20 from Abby Hartup.
Memphis steps back into league play this weekend at Houston, Friday, and at National Division leader, South Florida, Sunday. The Tigers' next home match is the back side of a home-and-home stand with UAB, Nov. 3rd.
