Tampa, Fla. -- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (8-18, 0-12) remains winless in Conference USA following a 3-1 loss at South Florida (18-4, 11-1), Sunday.
Behind 1998 C-USA Freshman of the Year Michelle Collier, the Bulls dominated games one, two and four.
Initially, the Tigers came out and stood toe-to-toe with the National Division leading Bulls, taking the lead 3-0 in game one before USF ripped off six unanswered points. The Tigers responded by trying to spread around the offense, but the Bulls dug up 19 Memphis attacks, terminating eight of them for kills to push game point at 14-6. The Tigers held off the Bulls surge six times, pulling to 14-9 before a Memphis attack sailed out of bounds to give USF a 15-9 game one win. Collier, back from off-season knee surgery after missing last year, downed 13 kills in game one alone.
Game two opened with the Bulls making an adjustment to an aggressive Memphis blocking game. Head Coach Carrie Yerty made substitutions in her line-up, at one point having three of the Tigers' four freshmen on the floor in one rotation. The result was a Memphis team that scrambled and pulled the team from 4-1 down to 5-4 down. But Collier again stepped up and picked apart the Memphis defense, downing six kills before getting a break late in the second.
Game three looked to be a Tiger blow-out, with Memphis up 12-3 before the Bulls recovered from the Tiger blocking game, which stopped four total blocks in the third. But USF again got big kills from Collier and pulled to 12-9. An Amie Hamilton service ace and two Collier attack errors gave Memphis the 15-9 game three win.
Collier led USF with 27 kills, while senior April Harriman led Memphis with 12 kills in the 3-1 loss. Freshman Brittany Barnett downed nine kills, while Adrianne Edmonds added eight in the loss. The Tiger blocking game was led by Harriman, with seven total blocks, and Barnett, who finished with six blocks. Freshman Laura Stoke stopped four balls, including three in the game three Tiger win.
Memphis continues its final regular season road trip at Jacksonville State, Tuesday, and at UAB, Wednesday. The Tigers finish the regular season with four consecutive home matches, including a Nov. 7th contest against Christian Brothers University that was added after the posters and media guides were printed.
