Memphis, Tenn.-- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (11-19, 2-13) fell, 3-1, to Southern Mississippi (11-18, 3-12) in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Friday.
The Golden Eagles and the Tigers exchanged the first two games, with USM winning the opener, 15-9, and Memphis hitting a match-high .391 in a 15-3 game two win.
Southern Miss regrouped in between games two and three and game out to hold off a Memphis rally from 14-4 down to win game three, 15-9.
The two teams exchanged streaks in game four, knotting up at four apiece when USM pulled out to a 10-4 lead. Memphis sided out USM and pulled to 12-6 when Southern Miss threatened to close the match by scoring two more quick points for a 14-6 advantage. The Tigers held off match point and scored two points of their own to close to 14-8. One of Lindsey Westendorf's 19 kills sided the Memphis serve out to again threaten match point. But junior Ginger Garrett downed one of her team-leading 13 kills to side out the Golden Eagle serve and Memphis went on a mini-run, pulling to 14-13 before Westendorf struck again. Southern Miss won the match on a Memphis attack error that sailed wide, 15-13.
The USM win snaps a Golden Eagle three-match losing streak and a Memphis season-high four match winning streak.
In addition to Garrett's 13 kills, senior April Harriman and freshman Laura Stoke each had 11 kills in the Tigers' loss. In addition to hitting her career-high in kills, Stoke also led the team with six block assists. Junior Adrianne Edmonds led the defense with 11 digs.
Memphis rounds out its home schedule with a conference clash with Tulane, at 7 p.m., Saturday. The Tigers will honor this year's seniors before that match. Southern Miss travels to UAB to face the Blazers, Saturday.
