MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis baseball team fell to the University of Houston for the second time in two days on Saturday afternoon at USA Stadium in Millington.
Memphis drew first blood in the bottom of the first, when Tiger third baseman Tyler Shelton singled in Daniel Uggla and Michael Lewis to give Memphis an early two run lead.
Houston answered by adding one in the third inning on a delayed double steal. The Cougers had runners on first and third, and when Tiger catcher Rickey Clinton threw down to second base to try and catch Kieth Whatley stealing, Keith Ahrens was able to sneak home.
Houston took the lead in the top of the fifth inning off of a Josh Snook RBI single and a two-RBI double off of the bat of Thanos Papavisiliou to take a 4-2 lead. Houston added two more in the eighth inning off of Tiger reliever Nick Rogers.
The Tigers came charging back in the eighth inning, though. After Ricky Clinton singled and Kyle Scott was hit by a pitch, Josh Payne stepped up and hit his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to pull the Tigers within one run.
However, in the top of the ninth, Houston jumped back out by four with a three-run home run of their own by catcher Chris Snyder and stretched the lead to 9-5.
Matt Krabbe got the start for the Tigers and went seven innings, giving up four runs on five hits. He was credited with his second loss of the season. Nick Rogers and Joshua Cartwright appeared in relief for the Tigers. For the Cougers, freshman Austin Faught picked up his second win of the season, going five innings and giving up two earned runs.
Memphis closes out the series with the Cougers with a 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon game at USA Stadium in Millington. Tiger freshman Bill Edwards is slated to take the mound against Houston freshman Gene Flores.
