Corvallis, OR - The opening round of the NCAA West Regional was delayed 30 minutes while a heavy frost thawed on the greens but the cool weather did not cool off a hot University of Memphis Lady Tiger golf team. Led by the play of freshman sensation Meaghan Francella, the Lady Tigers posted a team score of 305 and are in fourth place after one round of play.
Nationally ranked Arizona has a 15 stroke lead, 287, over their closest challenger, Stanford, 302, going into Friday's second round at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Oregon. Michigan State is in third place at 304, followed by Memphis at 305. Ohio State rounds out the top five with a score of 306.
Natalie Gulbis of Arizona is the individual leader after carding a four under par round of 68 on the 6,089 yard course. Francella is tied for fifth at even par 72. Junior Sandra Hellsvik is tied for 31st at 77 and Marianne Ruud and Jennifer Jaszek are tied for 45th at six over par 78.
Francella, who won medalist honors in two tournaments this season and was named the Freshman of the Year in Conference USA, was bothered by lower back pain prior to leaving for Oregon. However, she battled through some mild stiffness early in her round on her way to a 72.
Round two of the NCAA West Regional begins at 7 PM PDT. The top eight teams from each region advance to the NCAA Finals hosted by Stetson University in DeLand, Florida.
