MEMPHIS, Tenn. - With a 1-0 victory over DePaul at Echles Field on Friday night, the Lady Tigers picked up their first Conference USA win of the 2001 and snapped a three-game losing streak in the process.
Freshman midfielder Annika Moller scored the game winner off a feed from senior midfielder Michelle Meduri at the 75:44 mark. Meduri's pass split two DePaul defenders and Moller beat the Blue Demon keeper with a slow roller into the lower right corner.
The 1-0 win comes as sophomore keeper Katarina Wicksell's third shutout on the season and her first C-USA shutout this year. Wicksell's lone save required an acrobatic stop as she dove backward, deflecting a Blue Demon shot off the crossbar and out of bounds early in the first half.
The game was a defensive struggle for the latter minutes of the first period and into the second. Memphis' goal was the first shot for either team for nearly a 40-minute period.
With the victory, the Lady Tigers improve to 3-5-1 (1-2, C-USA) and DePaul falls to 5-3-1 (0-2-1) on the season. After starting conference play under the grips of a two-game deficit, the Lady Tigers are hoping to use this weekend to make up some ground on the rest of the C-USA.
"Last weekend (Lady Tiger losses to St. Louis and Marquette) was tough for us," said Memphis coach Brooks Monaghan. "Those are two of the top teams in the conference and now we have that behind us. From here on out, I think we can play with any team in the conference."
Memphis will have a chance to prove its head coach right when the Lady Tigers take to the stadium at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex for a match with Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Lady Tigers are 0-7 all-time against Cincy, including a 2-1 loss to the Bearcats last season.
