Memphis Baseball Defeated by Tulane 12-3

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tiger pitching staff was unable to contain the Green Wave bats as Tulane (18-6, 3-2 C-USA) bombarded Memphis (6-13, 1-4 C-USA) with a 16-hit attack in a 12-3 decision in C-USA action Saturday afternoon. Michael Aubrey and Tony Giarratano each went 3-for-4 for Tulane. The Tigers were led by Chad House, who was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Kevin House scored a run in addition to a 3-for-4 performance.
Tulane again drew first blood in the first inning when Michael Aubrey singled to center for his fifth consecutive hit, scoring Jonny Kaplan. Kaplan singled to leadoff the Wave first, advanced to second on a groundball and stole third before Aubrey's RBI single.
The Green Wave took a 4-0 advantage with three runs in the third when
Memphis fought back to close the gap to 4-1 in the fourth after back-to-back singles by Chad House and Kevin House. Josh Payne followed with an RBI fielder's choice ground ball to the hole at shortstop to plate C House.
Tulane countered in the fifth with a leadoff double to left-center by Giarratano, who advanced to third on a throwing error by Chad House. Aubrey then reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to second baseman Bill Moss who's flip to third to catch Giarrantano at third was just late. Aubrey took second on the throw.
The House-House connection teamed up again in the sixth inning, with consecutive singles through the left side. Kurt Welch lined an RBI single through the left side just two batters later to score C. House for a 6-2 score.
Tulane put the contest out of reach with three insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single by freshman third baseman Corey Penedo. Aubrey's 2-RBI double down the rightfield line made the score 9-2.
Memphis managed to cross one final run in the eighth inning after stringing together three straight hit by K. House, Josh Payne and Kurt Welch. Welch collected his second RBI of the day with single to left to score K. House.
The Greenies responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the eighth for the final 12-3 tally.
Jarrett Grube (0-2) suffered the loss on the hill for Memphis pitching 5.1 innings and giving up seven runs on nine hits.
Freshman starter J.R. Crowel earned the win for Tulane holding Memphis to three runs, all of which were earned, on nine hits in eight innings.
Memphis and Tulane will play the series finale on Sun., Mar. 23. First pitch is set for 1. p.m.
