Rifle Ranked in Top Twenty in Nation

The Tigers broke into the top twenty in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, ranking 16th in the country in smallbore and 10th in the air rifle scoring. The Tigers wrapped a busy week at the end of January with the UT Martin and the Tiger Spring Open Events, finishing fifth in the smallbore and air at UT Martin and 1st in the Tiger Spring Open with a new school record of 1,549 points.

Freshman Katie Benjamin had her best day as a Tiger finishing in fifth place in the individual standings in the smallbore event with a 1160 and second in the air with a 389. Fellow freshman Sarah Carr set a new personal record in the air with a 388. Memphis finished in fifth place overall in smallbore and air behind Murray State, UT Martin, Missouri-Kansas City and Ole Miss and defeating Morehead State. Memphis also finished second in the air rifle competition behind event winner Murray State and defeating Ole Miss, UT Martin (Mixed), Missouri-KC, UT Martin (Womens), Austin Peay, Morehead State, UAB and Mercer.
Tiger Spring Open at Memphis Jan. 22-29
The Tigers set new school record at the Tigers Sprint Open. Led by Tiger All-American Beth Tidmore's new personal best of 396, Memphis set a new team mark of 1549. Freshman Katie Benjamin had her best day in air rifle as a Tiger with 391, while Sarah Carr shot a personal-best 390. Freshman Brian Phillip shot a 372 to give Memphis the new record. Junior J.B Vaughan competed as an individual at the tournament, finishing with a 381, while senior Bobby Leblanc finished with a 362. Memphis defeated Austin Peay (1443), UAB (1237), and Mercer 1191 at the home tournament.
Withrow Invitational at Murray Ky Jan.30
Memphis finished seventh out of 11 participating teams at the Withrow Invitataional at Murray State University, January 30th. Memphis' 6005 was its second-highest aggregate score of the season. The Tigers also wound up in 4th place in the air (out of 13 teams) behind Murray
State, Jacksonville State and Kentucky, all top 10 teams nationally.
Brian Phillips shot a new personal best in the air with a 386, while the Tigers recorded the best air score of the year at Murray State with a 1544. JB Vaughan tied his best smallbore score (1116) and set a new best in the air rifle (384) for his best aggregate score of his career, 1500.
Bobby Leblanc had his second highest smallbore score of his career with a 1078.

Carr Becomes Third Tiger Invited to Junior Olympics
Tiger freshman Sarah Carr received an invitation to the Junior Olympics based on her second place finish at the Tennessee Junior Olympic State Championships. She will join teammates Katie Benjamin and Beth Tidmore. Benjamin won the New Hampshire Junior Olympic State meet and Tidmore won the Georgia Junior Olympic State Championship.
