Middle Tennessee took advantage of three Memphis errors to score five unearned runs in its first at-bat and cruised to a 15-3 win over the Tigers Tuesday night at Reese Smith Field.
The Blue Raiders offense that ranks 13th nationally in batting average, pounded out 20 hits, including at least two hits in five frames. Senior shortstop Jeff Beachum posted a career-high five hits for the Blue Raiders, who had six hitters in the lineup record multiple hits against the Memphis pitching staff.
After the MT first, Memphis got on the board in the second after Joey Lieberman doubled to left centerfield and scored on a single by Michael Murray.
A home run by Michael McKenry made it 9-1 after two innings, and two more Blue Raider tallies in the fifth put the contest away, 11-1.
Consecutive doubles by Robbie Goss and Trey Wiedman produced a run. Goss was 2-for-2 on the night. Wiedman then scored the Tigers final run of the night on a double play ground ball.
MT answered with four runs in the home half of the eighth, highlighted by a three-run blast to left by Josh Horn.
Lance Scoggins took the loss for Memphis, while Peter Mantzanis picked up his second win for the Blue Raiders.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the series finale at 7 p.m.
