MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Tulane (20-4, 9-2 C-USA) hit 43.7 percent from the field and forced Memphis in to 23 turnovers to become the first Conference USA team to hit the 20-win mark on the season with a 77-61 win over Memphis (3-22, 0-11) Wednesday night.
" We've got to learn from our mistakes and we get carrying that over,' Head Coach Blair Savage-Lansden said. "At East Carolina, we had to call a quick time out talk about it. We get ourselves sometimes a hole that's dug too deep, and this time of the year, especially when you're going up against a smart team like Tulane, you have to capitalize when we get a turnover. We had great penetration at times. We manned, we zoned, we did a little bit of everything and we got some looks, but we just have to learn to capitalize."
Tulane used full court pressure throughout the early parts of both halves to disrupt the Lady Tiger offense, and to hold Memphis to under 20 percent through the first 12 minutes of the game. Memphis started driving the lane and converting buckets in transition to pull to 42-24 down at the break, and would outscore Tulane 37-35 in the second half, but could never push to fewer than 13 down.
"Late in the second half we started making a run because we were rebounding, we closed the gap because we played good defense. But when you're down, you cannot trade baskets, and that's what we did.'
Freshman Jazmyn Green led all scorers with a career-high 16 points, while Ashley Thornton and Devin Necaise each added nine points. Thornton also led the team with eight rebounds, while Necaise added seven. For the night, Memphis managed just four assists on 20 field goals.
Five different Tulane Green Wave players scored double digits to give Tulane its eighth straight win. Dominique Philpots led Tulane with 13 points, whil Megan Valicevicc added 12 points and seven rebounds. Jamie Montagnino added 11 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Memphis will make its first-ever trip to El Paso, Texas to face West Division foe UTEP, Saturday at 8:05 p.m. (CT). That game can be heard on WUMR, 91.7 FM. Jeff Brightwell will have the play-by-play call for that game.
