MEMPHIS - For a second straight week the Memphis track team will compete at cross-town Rhodes College as the Tigers participate in the Lynx Spring Break Invitational on Saturday.
The Tigers have kept up a grueling training schedule this week and once again train right through their meet. While the tough regimen may slow his athletes this weekend, Memphis head coach Kevin Robinson is focused on having his squad ready for the Conference USA Championships in May.
"The team is pretty beat up right now, and we've really been pushing them hard," Robinson said. "We probably won't get our best results of the season tomorrow, but our goal is to be ready to peak in May."
Despite the tough training three men's throwers qualified for the NCAA Regionals last week. Steffen Nerdal qualified in the discus and the hammer throw, setting a new school record of 202-4 in the hammer and earning C-USA Athlete of the Week honors.
The Lady Tiger 800-meter record could be in jeopardy Saturday as the Australian tandem of Anneli Uys and Tina Sherratt compete in the event for the first time outdoors. After transferring to Memphis in January, Sherratt broke Memphis' indoor records in the both the 800 meters and the mile. She was also part of the women's distance medley relay team that shattered the previous school best by 13 seconds.
Gail Lee will make her outdoor debut in the shot put after skipping the event last week. The two-time All-American will look to get her regional qualifying mark out of the way early.
